How to make a firm queen bed softer only on one side?
My boyfriend and I share a mattress that's a little too firm for my tastes, but he loves it. How can I make my side softer? I've read good things about mattress toppers, but I'm not sure how to make it work with our queen-size bed. Here are my concerns with a topper:
- If I get a twin-size topper, the topper will extend to his half of the bed.
- I don't want my side of the bed to be much taller than his because of the topper.
- If I get a topper for half the bed, how do I keep it from shifting?
Also, please note that we cannot get a new mattress. We have to somehow modify this one to make it more comfortable for me.
I worked with used funiture for a couple of years & I don't know of any way to make a mattress softer (other than the little girls suggestion below, and you'd have to do a whole lot of jumping!), mattresses have innner springs and until those springs become weak it will remain firm. My only suggestion is to buy one of those Memory Foam mattress pads, they come in thicknesses of 1 1/2 inches, 2 inches, 3 inches, and 4 inches, (they are the best, I use one myself). Buy it for the size mattress you have now and with a typical sharp kitchen knife you can cut it down the center (and you'll have a spare that works very well on a couch too...for guests...or the BF when you're mad at him:). The thinner ones won't raise your side too much and if needed you can double it up with the other half too. Now they do slide some, and if fitted sheets don't stop that you can buy some carpet tape at many local hardware stores, carpet tape has a sticky side on both sides, place it on your mattress and the pad over that (read the instructions with the tape). Don't worry, you can remove the pad at any time too, it won't weld your pad down, it'll just keep it from slidding around.
When and if you do decide to buy a new mattress think about buying one that's to your taste and comfort, you can buy a firming board to place under his side to firm it up some (most people use 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch plywood cut the desired width and length). I don't know how well that works but I have seen people do it who want a firmer side and/or with back problems.
