College Dorm Bedbugs? Mattress Infestation?
Seems reasonable to assume college dorm mattresses, bedframes, carpets, etc are full of dust mites, bed bugs, etc.
Has there been any study in the amount of infestation in college dorms rooms? Apparently, the New York Times speculated that the average mattress doubles in weight over ten years due to accumulated filth.
So, it is worthwhile to spray a dorm room with insecticide/miticide before moving in?
What is the best mattress barrier/protector? Are the encasements effective, or are they torn apart by activity on the mattress?
If the dorm allows it I would spray the room until I emptied the can! With so many people converging from so many locals in one area I am sure there are bed bugs. I would encase the mattress and the pillows. However, encasement's will only help so much.Encasement's are a small factor in the bed bug war. The most important thing is to keep all bedding and clothing OFF the floor. If possible isolate your bed. (there are instructions on the web on how to do this) your objective is to keep bedbugs from climbing up on to the bed. Try to keep clutter down as much as possible. IDo not and repeat do not let anyone set outside bags,purses on your bed.
