How to wash a feather mattress topper?
it says spot clean only but this thing needs a whole wash. i have a super capacity washing machine without an agitator so it will fit in my washer but any other tips? i read something about using the cold cycle and only liquid detergent. im going to throw it in the washer either way because im at least going to try and wash it, i just dont want to ruin my brand new washer by stuffing it with feathers.. any help would be great and i DO pick best answer (: thanks!!!!
I couldn't afford to have mine dry cleaned as that would cost over one hundred dollars, but like yours I really needed to wash it. I figured it's ruined the way it is and whatever happens to it ,happens to it.I washed it and dried it with great success but I do have a few pointers I have learned washing feathers. Put it in the washer first in cold water only. No soap just plain water. After it fills turn it to rinse cycle. If you don't do that first the feathers will float on top of the water and you will only get part of it clean. Putting it on Rance gets it completely wet and gets all the air spun out of it. By that time it will look flat and allot smaller but wont be once it has dried. After the rinsing go ahead and wash it on full cycle with cold water and soap.I like fabric softener also.Don't use bleach though because it will eat the material thin and you don't want that. Then dry on lowest setting for awhile and if you have some tennis balls, throw them in to fluff it up more. Will dry in about one and one half hours on low! I do this all the time now, who needs a dry cleaner? I wash my feather pillows that way too but you have to remember to use rinse first or they just float on top and don't wash.
